NX100 x OK Go “What is your next project?” winning 2 awards at ADFEST 2011!

Samsung’s NX100 with OK Go “What is your next project? Last Leaf” campaign has won 2 awards from 14^th ADFEST on 18th of March, the three-day festival of advertising, ideas and creativity held at Mövenpick Resort & Spa in Phuket, Thailand from March 17th to 19th, 2011.

“What is your next project? Last Leaf” has won silver prize from Film Craft Lotus “Single for Animation” category and bronze prize from Cyber Lotus “Best Use of Viral” category.

Founded in 1998, ADFEST is Asia Pacific’s largest annual regional advertising festival celebrating and raising the standard of creativity in the region.

ADFEST 2011′s theme, “JUMP START,” reflects ADFEST’s commitment to the promising beginning not only of the young blood in the advertising and production industries, but also the revived inspiration of professionals, as well as ADFEST’s reconfirmation as a leading advertising event with renewed energy.

“What is your next project? Last Leaf” campaign partnering with viral music video pioneers OK Go in creating the band’s latest music video has marked out uncharted territory for both music videos and camera brand marketing. The music video was filmed using the new Samsung NX100, Samsung’s latest innovation in premium camera technology.

What about the NX100 in 2010?

As a follow-up to the NX10, the NX100 was launched in September, becoming Samsung’s second mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. With its unique design of a leaf, morning dew, and i-Function lens, the NX100 created buzz in the second half of 2010, gaining as much popularity as the NX10. The product appealed particularly strong to those who value style. The lens offers unique functions that camera manias would only have dreamt of! Its biggest strength is the ability to adjust the features without taking your eyes off the view finder; you can capture every moment of the subject. The lens was also well-received by users of the NX10 as a simple firmware is enough to have it compatible with the NX100.

Samsung finally unveiled NX100 and i-Function lens!

The NX10 was first unveiled in Hong Kong in September. With no official information on the NX100 until the unveiling ceremony, users as well as the press showed keen interest.

The next line-up to the new concept, i-Function lens was also revealed. The new lens for 2011 includes a movie pro 18-200mm lens, 16mm wide pancake lens, and the macro 60mm lens that many are waiting for.

The NX100′s Leaf Design Won the PIN UP Design Awards!

One of the biggest benefits of the NX100 is its design. At the PIN UP Design Awards, the NX100 received the bronze award for Electronic Devices for its ergonomic design.

The NX100 once again received the spotlight when it collaborated with the musicians OK Go. If you like music, surely you would know ‘OK Go,’ a YouTube indie band. The process of producing ‘Last leaf’ was made into several episodes utilizing the NX100, which you can enjoy on-line. Here is episode 1, the first step to the birth of the ‘Last Leaf’ music video.

This photo portrays a striking balance of three glasses filled with red, yellow, and blue liquid. Also, the dark hand behind the glass in contrast with the three colors helps the picture to maintain balance. Highly praised for its ‘excellent idea’ from users, the picture more than fully portrays color from the Samsung camera.

This breathtaking picture was taken using the long exposure of the NX100. The flow of the water curbing the valley resembles white clouds. The 20mm lens and 30 seconds shutter speed well illustrates the flow of water. Why don’t you try it yourself at a near-by river or valley?

The NX100 performs excellently even in a very dark environment. This is a picture of a bridge at night with lights on. A low ISO is used to capture as much of the little light as possible for a warm and beautiful picture. You’ll need equipments such as a tripod and a long nose, but with the NX100, you can easily become a professional even in dark settings!

We’ve seen the UI interface now let’s take a closer look at the quality, additional functions, and movie recording.

The 20mm and 20-50mm lenses released this time concentrate on wide angle shots. As you can see in the pictures they can take landscape shots quite well

The 20mm and 20-50mm lenses support the i-Function and have great quality, so users won’t have any (problems) By using the advanced sensor in the NX100, it has great corner quality. I think this camera has the best results for a mirrorless camera.

This was shot with the portrait mode, it came out so well. Shot in the shade it has great natural colors.

I personally use an external flash most of the time when shooting indoor shots. However, if it’s not possible to use a flash, I adjust the ISO, but noise is always a problem.

Zoom lenses it is possible to blur out the background easily.

This is the IOS test. It can go up to ISO 6400, but I found the noise to be too great and in annoyed me. Even with the noise reduction.

The NX100 has the universal hot shot and supports TTL perfectly, so after attaching the synchronizer, it can be used in a studio or something. (I took shots in a studio using 400x2200W light source, and it worked perfectly.)

It was unsatisfactory that it doesn’t support a optical viewfinder. If it had supported an external optical viewfinder, I could have used it in a studio without any inconvenience, but I couldn’t take any good shots with the display when I adjusting the brightness or exposure with it.

The frame mode was a big help in setting the focus when I used manual focus. It would zoom in on the frame letting me fix it very easily.

These images were taken in a studio. And I think the quality of them was as good as any professional cameras quality.

In order get more natural colors various White Balance menus are provided. After the test, I could see that the auto white balance was quite accurate. And by changing the temperature manual I could add in red or blue tones.

Picture Wizard which is the same as Photo Style in a compact camera is supported.

Smart Filter can be applied to pictures already taken. It supports vignetting, miniature, fish eye, sketch, defog, dot pattern, and Smart Focus filter. Unlike Picture Wizard which changes the color of the picture. When applying Smart Filter, a new file is made and the size becomes smaller.

This is a Video recorded in HD, it was a little annoying that the depth was controlled by the focus ring. But look at the quality.

You can connect the camera to a A/V instrument. It supports TV-OUT as well.

It’s playing the images and movies in the best quality.

With Intelli-Studio users can look at their picture, and videos. Organize them, and edit them. Also, the best part is that it connects to the GPS, and you can see where the picture where taken with Google Maps.

Just right click and you can activate all these views.

Professional photo & movie editing software like Photoshop, Premier, or Vegat are really convenient for professionals, but actually very difficult for beginners to use. Because Intelli-Studio supports some editing functions for pictures and movies, beginners can make their own images and movies.

This is the sharing function and it supports upload on YouTube, Flickr, Facebook and email transfer. Users don’t need to go to each site to upload videos. With Intelli-Studio, it’s easy to upload UCC movies.

It supports not only JPEG, but also RAW, and for easy image editing, Samsung RAW converter 4 is included.

The great quality, mobility, and various additional functions will satisfy a lot of users, I expect. At first it wasn’t my favorite design, but after a few weeks I started to really like the look.

The biggest strength of the NX100 is the great quality. Both the 20mm and 20-50mm lenses have the great quality enough for professional purpose

The newly added i-Function is also very important. All the primary functions can be controlled by using the lens, so it will give satisfaction. It took me a bit to get used to it but after I did I found that it worked very smoothly.

It’s a very small camera, but the size doesn’t matter, because the quality is so high. With the AMOLED screen all my pictures looked great, and with the newly added features like the GPS, EVF, and Flash this camera was pretty good.

I think this camera could be a leading in the mirrorless camera race of 2011. Its light, quality is high, convenient to use, and has all the function of a digital camera. I recommend this camera to a person that is looking for a high end digital camera but doesn’t want to deal with the heavy burden of a DSLR. Also it pretty cheap for a mirrorless interchangeable camera.
