The battleground for the point and click shooter is getting hotter, especially where big zoom compacts are concerned. Now Samsung is jostling for position with Panasonic with its 15x optical zoom WB600 being offered with a host of added features and a robust but solid build at a bargain basement price.

Announced last year, Samsung's 12.2 effective megapixel WB600 charges into battle with Panasonic's TZ camera series, for one, by virtue of shoehorning a 15x optical zoom into its compact 30mm 'thick' chassis, an improvement on its predecessor the WB500's 10x. Like the competition it eschews mini DSLR/bridge camera styling by keeping the entirety of that long lens flush with the body when not in use, meaning it will still fit easily in an average pocket or handbag – the perfect travellers companion, it would seem.

Samsung WP10 Waterproof Digital Camera Review

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at Samsung's waterproof WP10, which can resist water to a depth of three metres.

Samsung's WP10 costs around £120 and is a water resistant camera capable of depths of up to three metres, which should make it ideal for use by the beach, swimming pool or even for a bit of snorkelling. It's the only water resistant compact Samsung currently make, but is priced so that it is not out of reach of those on a budget.

Samsung WP10: Features
Within the sealed waterproof body Samsung have provided a 5x optical zoom lens, covering a range equivalent to 35-175mm on a 35mm camera, and a 12 megapixel sensor for recording images. HD video can also be recorded at resolutions up to 720p and HDMI connectivity is included for seamless integration with your television set.

The usual array of detections found on modern digital cameras is included, such as Face Detection, Blink Detection, Scene Recognition in the Smart Auto Mode and Smile Detection, so that you can take a step back and leave the technical stuff to the camera. A variety of automatic scene programs are also available, including the Aqua mode, which optimises the camera for underwater shooting. Digital image stabilisation is provided to help iron out camera shake, which is a welcome addition, although a mechanical solution would be more effective.

Samsung PL100

This point-and-shoot with dual LCD will satisfy users who like to take self-portraits, but its photo quality isn't the best on the market.
Samsung's dual LCD cameras remain the best choice for people who shoot a lot of self-portraits. Not necessarily because they take great photos, but because their secondary front LCD makes it very easy to see just what you're shooting--stills or video--from in front of the camera. The PL100 is currently Samsung's most affordable model with the feature, and it feels like corners were cut to get the price low. That doesn't make it a bad camera, but it's definitely one with limitations. It's basically a step up from an average camera phone or smartphone, and the convenience of the front LCD makes the PL100 good value for the money.

Firmware Updates for NX10 and NX100

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a global leader in digital media and digital
convergence technologies announced firmware upgrades for two products within
Samsung’s NX compact system camera range – the NX100 and NX10 on April 18th 2011 in Seoul
Korea.

The firmware upgrades for NX100 and NX10 will give a unified user
experience for the full NX range and provide enhanced features for existing
customers.

Following the availability of the innovative i-Function lens feature on both
models, the latest upgrades are set to make the cameras even more convenient for
the photographer to use, bringing added value to Samsung’s NX range customers
and putting the perfect picture at their fingertips.

Here are the improvements in NX10 (v1.30) and NX100 (v1.10)
Firmwares

1. The Panorama function is added (in the Scene Mode menu).
2. New
18-55(II) mm, 50-200(II) mm, and 18-200 mm i-Function lenses are supported (in
addition to the OIS menu).
3. The algorithm of Video AF is improved, and the
low contrast in the AF function is increased.
4. By default, the Video AF
mode is set to CAF.

The firmware upgrade also makes these functions faster and quieter than ever,
giving photographers the ability to take noise-free, professional-looking still
images and movies with ease.

In addition, through the upgraded firmware, the NX100 and NX10 now provide the i-Function
setting help guide via the camera’s display, as available on the recent NX11
model. The feature helps users take impressive shots more easily by guiding
users with explanations on different functions of the i-Function lens.

Mr. Hyunho Chung, Executive Vice President and Head of the Digital Imaging
Business, Samsung Electronics, commented: “We continually look for ways to
improve the photography experience, to make it more fun and add value for our
customers. The latest upgrade is reflective of this. Users of the NX system
already benefit from key features such as compact portability of the devices,
and innovations like the i-Function lens. Through ongoing developments, we hope
to offer even more to enable photographers of all levels to get the best results
and professional-looking pictures every time. We look forward to announcing a
number of additional developments in the future to make the NX range even easier
for our customers to use.”

The upgrades will be available from April 18, 2011 for all NX100 and NX10 customers to download at www.samsung.com.

Discover the hidden 1.8” Dual LCD Samsung ST100

Mirrorless and hybrid cameras are becoming the leading cameras in the market today. But, DSLR cameras still have value, as well as compact digital cameras are also doing okay in the market.

When it comes to Samsung, they have released cameras such as NX series (Mirrorless), GX series (DSLR), and compact digital cameras (ST/WB series), and today I’m going to take a look at the ST100 which is a compact digital camera.

▲ Appearance / Design

It comes in 2 colors purple and black, and has a shiny body. It is 100x60x20mm and weighs 135g. (Not including the battery and memory card)

The lens is the famous Schneider 6.3-31.5mm (35-175mm on 35mm equivalent) of focal length and F3.6-4.8. It’s an inner zoom type and supports 5x digital zoom.

It’s a dual LCD camera with a 1.8” LCD on the front. It’s a specialized camera for self shots. For your information, it supports couple/jump/smile shot modes which are taken automatically.

On the back, it has the 3.5” wide touch screen LCD like previous models.

The sides are finished in a smooth curved line and on the right side, there’s a strap ring.

On the top, it has F.LCD/Power/Shutter/Zoom/Play buttons, and the F.LCD button is to activate the front LCD. For your information, by tapping the front LCD, the front LCD can be turned on as well.

On the bottom, it has a battery/memory card chamber, recharge/data cable connection port, and tripod connection port. The battery is 3.7V 740mAh Li-Ion and MicroSD is used as the memory card.

In design, it’s like a normal digital camera, but it’s more specialized for self shots with the dual LCD.

▲ UI/Menu

The basic UI and menu are the same as the previous cameras.

All of the functions are operated by touch and by selecting the left upper side, the screen mode can be selected. Through the mode button, the menu such as size/filter/ISO/color can be set.

The menu is also very similar to other ST series. The menu also changes with the shooting mode.

The mode can change to Smart Auto/Movie/Program mode by rotating the motion recognition button located on the right center.

The overall menu and UI lay outs are the same as the previous ST series and all the menus are operated by touch. (Or motion recognition)

▲ Screen Size

The Samsung ST100 has a 1/2.3” CCD and 14.48M pixels (14.2M effective pixels). 3 kinds of screen ratio modes are supported and the general 4:3 ratio supports 6 sizes such as1M/3M/5M/8M/12M/14M.

It also supports 16:9 2M/10M and DSLR 3:2 12M.

It supports 5x zoom and the pictures below are the maximum wide angle and maximum telephoto angle images.

▲ Center / Corner quality and ISO

Compared with the center quality, the corner quality is a little insufficient.

From ISO 400, I started to notice noise. Other digital cameras normally have noise from ISO 400.

The quality is not that great, but like a normal digital camera.

▲ Additional functions

Samsung ST series supports various additional functions, and these functions allows a lot of ease of use for users. Face recognition also worked well.

Scene mode consists of various modes such as Beauty Shot/Frame Guide/Night Scenery/Portrait/Macro/Text/Backlight. According to the current scene, users can select the proper scene mode.

Sometimes, it’s a little too difficult to choose the appropriate scene, and because ISO/Shutter speed/Aperture is fixed in the different modes I had to experiment a bit to get what I wanted.

Smart Filter is my favorite function. It consists of Miniature, Vignetting, Fish eye 1 & 2, Defog, and Sketch. The Functions gave me pictures a lot of personality.

We’ve looked at the ST100 with the 1.8” dual LCD from Samsung. This cameras great for the Myspace style photos with it’s front LCD. So for the ladies and gents that like to take great self shots for their personal blogs and post this is a great camera to look at. And damn it makes you look good. Especially the Smart Filters, allowing each picture to really feel unique.

Especially, NX10 gave me strong first impression when I saw the reviews of NX10. NX10’s mirrorless interchangeable lens is giving me many different experiences that I am not able to experience by using other cameras. What ever objects I take, photos and videos are always made in high resolution and easy to adjust the setting by just turning focus lens. So I never lose any shots. Except that, compact body, high resolution, and rapid AF sensor delivered me high satisfaction and fulfilled my needs.
In addition, AP praised the NX series as the best value for money. ‘It’s easy to use and has a nice grip and excellent image quality compare with other competitor’s products.’
